100 Women of the Philippines - Celebrating Filipino Womanhood in the New Millenium

by: Joy Buensalido and Abe Florendo

This exceptional book on 100 Women of the Philippines presents the stories of women who have excelled in their work, profession or apostolate and contributed to national development and, in immeasurable ways, to the positive redefenition of what it means to be a women in modern Philippine society.

The women come from fields of endeavor, some traditional, some newly spawned by the unique needs and technologies of the latter part of the 20th century. And the are outstanding in whatever role or identity they have chosen—nun, teacher, industrialist, visual artist, actress, poetess, advertising practitioner, retailer, scriptwriter, puppeteer, social worker, cop, politician, computer whiz.

Interestingly written, filled with tasteful photographs, and artistically designed, the book is a veritable who’s who in the Philippine society. The selection includes former President Corazon Aquino, Vice Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, First Lady Loi Ejercito, former First Lady Amelita Ramos, multi-awarded movie directors, Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Laurice Guilen, theater titan Zeneida Amador, international stage actresses Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson, film divas Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos and Sharon Cuneta, and achievers abroad like Josie Natori, Loida Nicolas-Lewis and Anna Bayle.

Some others are seasoned food writer Doreen Fernandez, sculptress Julie Lluch, entrepreneurs Socorro Ramos, Virgie Ramos, Elena Lim and Zenaida Tantoco, educator Patricia Licuanan, Comelec chair Harriet Demetriou, Marian propagandist June Keithley, women’s right advocate Sister Mary John Mananzan, OSB, songbird Regine Velasquez, artist Impy Pilapil, and poetess Ophelia Alcantara-Dimalanta.

The book also includes “noncelebrities” whose accomplishment are no less impressive, like community workers Emma Alday and Felma Lagahit, policewoman Ligaya Cabal, overseas worker Encarnacion Montales, outstanding principal Diana Santos, and Raquel Tiglao of the Women’s Crisis Center.

The profiles are written by some of the country’s well-known writers and journalists, among them Lorna Tirol, Angelina Gooy, Ricky Lo, Winnie Velasquez, Nini Yarte, Llita Logarta, Elvira Mata, Eric Catipon, Tanya Lara, Norma Olizon-Chikiamco, Bayani San Diego. Photographs were taken by an equally talented bunch of lensmen—Jun de Leon, Ed Santiago, Bernard Testa, Joan Bondoc, Mike Alquinto, Raymund Isaac and Bobot Meru.

A special section of the book is dedicated to women under 35 who are making a name for themselves in their fields—and who will most likely be some of the 100 women of the new millennium.
