Intended as a complement to his biography, and earlier-published collections of his speeches, the selections document the various roles that he played as a public official and later as a leading private figure - that of a crusader against graft and corruption, a champion of nationalist causes and a highly - principled politician. To whatever causes he espouised he always brought the strength of his convictions and he achieved a consistency over such a long period of time. That the did so while maintaining an exemplary private life makes him a truly extraordinary figure and a genuine hero of the Filipino people.
