This Guidebook aims to be a roadmap through the criminal justice system for practicing journalists and journalism students.
For most people, this could be a difficult but fascinating journey into an alien world that one only gets to enter either as an accused in a case or as victim of injustice.
Yet, journalists, especially those assigned to cover the justice beat, are thrust into the world to chronicle for their readers how the wheels of justice turn in this century. It thus becomes necessary for them to know the basic processes of criminal prosecution - from the time of arrest of a suspect to Judgement Day when the accused's guilt or innocence will be decided by the court.
This Guidebook hopes that journalists shall emerge from their journey into the maze of the justice system as better chroniclers of judicial processes, as well as more informed about their own rights, responsibilities and accountabilities in a country governed by laws and kept alive by what Daniel Webster called " the great interest of man on earth" - Justice.
